Taking Care of your bike battery

Get the battery topped up with good quality distill water every month with out fail. The reading of the battery should be around 12.36 + or - 10 for a good healthy battery with the help of a Multimeter. Make sure the battery drainpipe is connected securely to the battery and have some petroleum jelly applied to the terminals to prevent corrosion. The terminals must be cleaned every month to make sure the discharge sludge doesn't corrode the terminals as acid is discharged from the battery every time we crank the battery for self start.

Make sure you do not use the electric start until the bike has at least run for 5 kms. By doing all the above, a battery would last easily for 3+ years and the owner need not change their batteries frequently due to lack of maintenance. Due to the heat and constant usage of the battery the Electrolyte will get dried up easily that's why to maintain battery life we need to top up the electrolyte level with pure distill water.

Care for your Bike

How proud we feel when our bike is just one week old! There is a shine in the bike and the empty number plate tells our friends that it is brand new. But most of us really start caring less about the bike's looks as time goes on, and the bike is no longer shiny and appealing. But think again, a few minutes of extra care every day will keep it as good as new. And do you remember? Girls like clean and neat guys! The following tips will help your bike to look better than your neighbor's...

Cleaning & Washing : Wash the bike yourself once a week with hand cloth and a bucket of plain clean water. Do not use any detergent or chemicals, as it would harm the paint finish of the bike. Don't give the bike for water wash outside frequently as the water jet spray used has high pressure and will enter the electric circuit and wires, also more importantly stagnate at some unapproachable places and eventually lead to rusting. Always remember your bike must look good every time you hop on it. Just as we bathe, brush, shave and comb everyday your bike bike also needs some basic care and is entitled to proper maintenance. The cleaner your two-wheeler is the better your bike will perform.

Cleaning your bike yourself improves your bond between you and your two-wheeled steed and its fun as you would discover and explore your bike and learn more about your two wheeler. it also gives you a good workout as you stretch and reach for those unapproachable places. Wash your bike gently with water and hand and wipe clean with a soft clean cloth. Getting the bike water washed once a month is acceptable. Make sure you take your bike out for a spin immediately after the water wash as it would automatically dry the water at places you cant reach by hand. Make sure you cover the exhaust while cleaning your bike with polythene cover and secure a rubber band tightly across the exhaust and the plastic cover.

Protection of cycle parts: Always park your bike under a shadle as this would help you conserve fuel as the shade prevents not only the loss of fuel due to evaporation but also protect your bike's paint finish. By not exposing your bike to too much sunlight or rain or dust you can enhance the life of the cycle parts of your two-wheeler especially the rubber parts. For most manufacturers rubber parts are not easily available for sale at most dealerships and the rubber parts play a major role for your two wheeler's performance. Always remember the rubber engine mountings, the rubber fuel lines, the electric wires insulation can take a beating due to too much exposure to the environment.
Use rubber patches to prevent rusting : Try to stick tube rubber to the bottom surface of two wheeler's side stand and main stand. By doing so the metal won't scratch against the ground thereby protecting the paint finish. This helps in preventing rusting of the under sides of both the stands especially during rains as rainwater will rust the parts wherever there is no step (as shown in the third picture, on the right side) and put the bike on to the side stand or main stand.

Rust prevention spray : There is a spray called WD40 it is an anti rust spray. Use it in places where your two-wheeler develops rusting so that the spray prevents further rusting of the part.

Teflon coat : Get the bike Teflon coated once every 3 months as the environmental conditions these days wreak havoc on your bike. It would only cost you Rs. 150-200 depending on the shop and wont take more than a couple of hours and will ensure your bike is rust free and protect the paint finish.

I am going to stick to the above tips to keep my bike always shiny and sexy.....
will you?

Bajaj pulsar 150cc DTS-i Review

The Bajaj pulsar is the first bike in india which came in direct competition with the Hero Honda CBZ. Later Bajaj introduced pulsar 150cc DTS-i with digital twin spark ignition and till today pulsar is one of the most sought after bike in the 150cc segment. it has definitely won over other bikes, but let us justify its triumph.

How does it look?

The engineers at Bajaj realized the fact that if there is no beauty and only brawn, it is not going to sell in indian market. Claimed to be designed and developed in japan, this bike does have a head turning looks. The most noticeable feature of the bike is the tank. Big tanks give a big bike feel, and when pulsar was introduced, it had one of the biggest tanks in india.
The design of the headlamps has been viewed differently by people. Some really love it and some say it could have been designed better. The head light comes with city lights also called tell tale lights which is a value addition to its looks. Bullet and karizma were the only bikes with city lights before pulsar was introduced.
The tail part of the bike.. hmm, yeah, i could say it is nicely designed too. Here too there is a difference of opinion. The new razor sharp rear light whether looking good or nor not, definitely adds to the uniqueness of Bajaj Pulsar.

How does it perform?

Bajaj says "DTS-i gives high power with out compromsing on mileage." and the bike lives upto this statement. Another great advantage of the Digital Twin spark ignition is the throttle responsiveness. Definitely the throttle response is better than the CBZ. it does give a good adrenaline rush when you twist the throttle.
when i had a ride on this bike, what i felt was a felling of insecurity even though the bike is heavy, I some how felt that the bike is not as safe as the karizma. i cannot technically explain why it is so, but that what i felt. But the pickup is awesome. Karizma picks up in slow and steady pace and maintains stability at high speeds. but pulsar jumps off pretty fast but cannot be as good as the karizma when at speed more than 80 Kmph.
Bajaj has generously provided pulsar with good disc breaks, but the brakes are too sensitive that it has to be applied carefully. I have heard many people applying the front discs too quick and due to the type of weight distribution that the bike has, the bike topples over.

it is claimed that the Bajaj pulsar 150cc gives a mileage of around 55-60kmpl. But it greatly depends on user riding quality, service quality and frequency of maintenance.

How does it stand out?

Bajaj pulsar was a great buy something ago, but right now considering the competition there are better bikes around from honda, Tvs and Yamaha. People are already bored seeing too many pulsars in the city. It is time for bajaj too launch a new 150cc model to its product line.

The digital console was an attraction a while ago, but now many bikes have introduced them. if you are a Pulsar fan and have admired the bike for quite a long time, then go ahead and buy it....

Tips for Improving your Bike's Mileage

The mileage of a bike is a critical factor in the buying decision and also keeping our running costs low. Many of you think that mileage is just about the cost of fuel, but it is not. A bike which gives a good mileage compared to other similar bikes is sure indication that the health of the bike is well maintained and the rider is carefull enough to get the bike frequently serviced and tuned.

I talked with sandeep from hyderabad and was surprised to know that his HERO HONDA KARIZMA R gives a mileage of 41 in the city and 49 in highways. His bike is in perfect health. to keep the engine healthy all you have to do is. let the engine warm up before you take it to real performance small engine like that of Splendor NXG and Passion plus have a horizontal engine, so as soon as the bike is started, the oil flows easily into the engine. but bikes with a high bore an d stroke find it difficult to circulate the oil throughtout the engine as soon as it is started.

Sandeep recommends bikers to put the choke, self start the engine and leave it for 10-15 seconds so that the oil gets heated up and the luke warn low density oil finds it easy to circulate throught upto the top of the engine. Do not leave the choke for too long as it would flood the engine with fuel. Do not open the throttle until it has run for atleast 5 km distance and the engine comes to a normal operating heat range.

if you gun the engine in cold conditions as soon as you start it,there would not be enough lubrication in the engine and it leads to more friction which ultimately damages the piston and the engine and hence your milleage will be low

if you go to a gym, your coach will ask you to warm up before you do some heavy lifiting and iron pumping... this is just like that. your bike is not much different from your body!

Another good tip worth mentioning is to remove the saree guard if there is no use for it. I am a student and even after I get married I do not expect my wife to site on the high back seat of karizma..... so i removed the sareee guard as soon as i bought it. it reduces dead weight by 4-5 kg and would definitely improve the performance of the engine and increase fuel efficiency.

Some basic fuel efficiency tips that you may have already know are

  • 1. Swith off your engine during signals with long waiting periods.
  • 2. change your oil according to your manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 3. Check your tube's pressure every month... higher pressure than the recommended value would give you more mileage but less friction and stability. so keep it to the optimum valve.

I am interested to know what kind of mileage your bike gives. Post the bike model and mileage in the comment below and let us see who reports the highest mileage!
