IMP FACTORS THAT AFFECT YOUT BIKE'S FUEL EFFICIENCY

Indian biker, achieving the highest possible fuel efficiency for any bike is a constant endeavor.The answer is to keep learning so that you do not forget the key points. I have already posted some tips for improving your bike's mileage. Here are some factors which affect fuel efficiency. I hope you find it useful.


AERODYNAMICS :: Aero dynamics do not make much of difference in indian motorcycles. How ever faired bikes like the KARIZMA R do offer a marginally more aero dynamic stance, but that's when the rider is firmly tucked in behind the fairing.

GADGETRY :: Aids that draw power from the engine and battery naturally results in more consumption of fuel. This includes over size horns, additional headlights etc. Over size and wider tyres also increase drag and reduce the fuel efficiency.

HiGHWAY RIDING :: lower capacity bikes aren't capable of high speeds on the highway and run out of breath over 80kmph, cruise at 60kmph on such bikes. Larger capacity motorcycles are comfortable cruising at 80kmph speeds but ensure that the engine is not stressed which will ensure optimum mileage. Avoid shifting up and down and try to maintain a sate and constant crusing speed in top gear. Do not open the throttle wide open, a part open throttle is the most efficient throttle opening. plan overtaking moves well in advance so that you dont have to brake not accelerate hard to pass vehicles. Reduce speed by easing off the throttle rather than by using the brakes. Smoothness is the key, in acceleration, in braking and in maintaining speed. which will deliver the best mileage.

WEIGHT :: Unnecessary accessories like excessively heavy crash guards, enveloping guards on scooters, oversize horns all add to the weight and consequently reduce fuel efficiency. On a 100kg bike even a 5kg increase will have an adverse effect on fuel consumtion.

FUEL :: Always buy fuel in the morning as it is sold by volume and expands during the day when it gets hot.

CLEANLINESS :: Any leaks will be immediately noticable on a clean bike and in a roundabout way will have an effect on the fuel efficiency. Dirt on the chain in between moving part etc will incease drag and consequently lower fuel efficiency.

OCTANE :: Check the owners manual on what quality of petrol your bike requires. Modern bikes run a very high compression ratio and need high octane fuel (93 octane fuel is available in the metros) to run with out knocking octane boosters (recommended on the pulsar) also do a good job of controlling knock. How ever on engines designed to run on 83 octane petrol using higher octane rating petrol or octane boosters will have no effect other than lightening your wallet. Remember that higher the octane rating higher the price per litre.


TANKING UP :: Do not tank up right to the brim. Not only is there a chance of spillage while filling up, petrol also expands with heat and can overflow. Filler caps on many bikes do leak once the rubber seal hardens and cracks. Tank up from busy and well know fuelling stations where quality and quantity are assured.

ENGINE EFFICIENCY :: Specific outout is the most reliable indicator of engine efficiency. Specific output is defined as the ratio between power and displacement and higher the specific output in terms of PS/ litre the more efficient the engine . lower emissions are also a sign of a more efficient engine. For example an engine designed to meet Euro II norms will be more efficient than a Euro I compliant engine. How ever an efficient engine will not necessarily translate into better fuel efficieny as it might be powering a heavier morocycle and geared more for performance.

Features of Monocross Suspension Technology

Many bikes are now a days advertised with the fact that it has a monocross suspension. A major merit of this Monocross suspension is that, compared to the conventional dual shock absorber type, it can be positioned close to the machine's center of gravity to improve the concentration of mass. Also, it enables greater freedom of positioning of the shock absorber unit and makes it possible to get greater wheel travel than the actual stroke of the shock absorber unit. with a p14mm rod and a q 62mm spring and an optimized design for the valve that created the damping force, the rear suspension of the FZ16 achieves the necessary maximum load capacity.

The Spring is a two- stage type with a different coil pitch in the upper and lower halves. The tighter coiled section contributes to a smoother ride, while the section with fewer coils supports load at the larger stroke to prevent bottoming. By the way, of all the motorcycle makers, Yamaha has the longest history of monocross suspension development. it way back in 1973 that Yamaha mounted  a 250cc motocross competition machine, YZM2SO, with a monocross suspension and won the world championship. After that, the monocross suspension became a standard feature on sport bikes by all makers....

Tips to Remember while Riding Your Bike

Each bike has its own life span where it can have the maximum performance. The longer you can maintain your bike in its best performance, the better will be its resale value. You can just go through the following points so that you remember it next time you take the bike for a ride.

1. ENGINE REVS ::
Do not over rev the engine. Most motor cycles, especially the 100cc to 125 cc bikes are low geared and have torquey engines that allow for commuting around town in top gear. Make sure you don't lug the engine either. Many motor cycles and scooters come with audible and visible optimum mileage indicators that help in extracting the best fuel efficiency. Most tachometers also have the optimum gear shift points marked out.

2. CLUTCH USAGE ::
Avoid slipping the clutch while riding and also during standing starts. Most riders clutch in and blip the throttle while weaving through traffic. it helps le performance minded but plays havoc on the full efficiency. if you are a commuter, now you know what to do.

3. TRAFFIC LIGHTS ::
Most traffic lights in the metros have timers. use them. if you are going to be stationery for over a minute shut off the engine. Of course an electric starter is a boon in such situations.

4. STARTING AND SHUTTING DOWN ::
Use the choke while starting up, most bikes are tuned to run on a lean air- fuel mixture and need the choke to fire up when cold. Run the bike for a few km with the choke on and at low revs while the engine warms up after which don't forget to shut off the choke. There is no need to rev or over rev the engine either while starting up or shutting down.

5. STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ::
Try and avoid congested roads as far as possible. Even if it means you have to take a slightly longer route this will save up on fuel costs.

6. GENTLE ON THE THROTTLE ::
Avoid being ham-fisted with the throttle. Build up revs slowly and progressively and avoid jack rabbit starts and stops.
